Amidst all the dreary climate change talk, there is positive news to share about the world.
A new Tongan island has been formed from the 2015 underwater Pacific volcano eruption between two Tongan islands, Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai – giving the new island a unique name of…Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai! Imaginative, right?
When it was first created, scientists had expected this little island to to stay above sea level for a few months and then erode. But it is hasn’t disappointed them and predictions state that it will take up to 30 years to deteriorate!
With this exciting news, it also has given researchers insights into similar formations in other parts of the solar system, including Mars.
Here’s to hoping this young island survives the harsh environmental factors it faces and that we uncover more about life on Mars!
